Government gateway

This has led some of our clients to ask what is a government gateway? Do I have one? If I don't have one, can I still make a claim? Here we look to address some of those concerns.

What is it?

The government gateway (also called personal tax account), allows you to:

  • check your Income Tax estimate and tax code
  • fill in, send and view a personal tax return
  • claim a tax refund
  • check and manage your tax credits
  • check your State Pension
  • track tax forms that you've submitted online
  • check or update your Marriage Allowance
  • tell HMRC about a change of address
  • check or update benefits you get from work, for example company car details and medical insurance
  • find your National Insurance number

Do I have one?

The only way is which you will have a government gateway account is if you have set one up. There is a link when you check whether you are eligible to make a claim under SEIS that takes you to set up your government gateway.

Can I still make a claim if I don't have a government gateway account?

Whilst the government have said the gateway is the recommended approach as this will be the most streamlined and efficient method, they have acknowledged there will be people who are unable to do this and so they are setting up a dedicated phone service for claims but this is not live as yet so we have no details.

If you need any further information please see the link below or contact us and we will be happy to advise. We do not have access to the claim and HMRC have stated they will take a dim view on any agents doing the claim pretending to be the client but we will help where we can.
