Hopeful Expense Claims

With the end of the financial year approaching, we thought we’d share with you some of the most outlandish expense claims made to HMRC. Some will shock you; some will tickle you but they’ll all entertain you!

The most extravagant claims start with holiday flights to the Caribbean. This is closely followed by the company that treated its “staff” to a luxury watch – despite having no staff!

One claim of international flights for dental treatment prior to business meetings was attempted and pet food for a guard dog was included too. The guard dog in question was a Shih Tzu…

A painter and decorator purchased Armani jeans and tried to claim those on expenses, citing that they were protective clothing for his job. Another business owner purchased underwear and tried to claim for those!

A small business asked for expenses to be covered on regular Friday night bonding sessions – that amounted to thousands while another purchased a garden shed and tried to claim for not just the shed itself but the cost of the garden space it took up!

Betting slips were submitted as were the receipts for a caravan holiday over the Easter weekend…

So, you see, a lot of these obviously shouldn’t have been submitted and weren’t honoured – but, you may feel unsure what you can and can’t claim for.

If that’s the case, just pick up the phone or send us an email. We’re here to help you get the most out of your business and are always willing to answer any of your questions.
